Thousands attend Trump rally in Minnesota 2 days before election
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - Thousands of people lined up for hours for the chance to be inside the Sun Country Airlines hangar for Sunday's Donald Trump event. The announcement the candidate was coming to Minnesota two days before election, was a pleasant surprise for his supporters.
“I love Minnesota, the reason I’m here is because I’ve been here and I know what’s going to happen, I know what’s going to happen. In two days we are going to win the great state of Minnesota and then we are going to win back the White House,” the Republican Nominee said to the crowd.
The crowd gathered excited to hear Trump's message. Before Sunday, Trump had yet to make a public appearance in Minnesota. Most polls currently show Trump trailing Clinton by 4-7 points in Minnesota but both he and his supporters believe Minnesota can be won.
“I’m asking for your vote so we can bring sanity to the process so we can repeal and replace Obamacare and save every family in Minnesota and across the country,” said Mr. Trump.
The Republican Nominee hit many familiar talking points during his speech including illegal immigration, trade and foreign policy. At one point referencing Minnesota's Somali population as an example of what he considers the dangers of refugees.
“Here in Minnesota you have seen firsthand the problems caused with faulty refugee vetting, with large numbers of Somali refugees coming into your state without your knowledge, without your support or your approval with some of them then joining ISIS and spreading their extremists all over the country and world,” Trump said.
As it has been throughout the campaign, the Affordable Care Act was on the minds of many of the rally's attendees.
“He’s really is all about bringing our jobs back and getting rid of Obamacare,” said Mike Lindell, CEO of MyPillow, Inc. and a Trump supporter. “He’s all about those things, and it’s everything we need in Minnesota. We need change.”
“I would say in Minnesota, you’re going to see it go red,” said Kristin Guerrette, who admitted she was once skeptical of Trump. “It’s not going to be a blue state anymore. I think the American people and Minnesotans are sick and tired of the money being taken out of our wallets on a daily basis.”
The timing of the visit on a NFL Sunday didn’t stop football fans from showing up at the rally.
“You see this kind of crowd come out here, the groundwell is so big,” said Bill Jungbauer, a Vikings fan who attended the rally. “Every one of these people is going to talk to 10 other people. They’re going to come out.”
