Woman found dead after car goes into northern Minnesota lake

A woman has died after her car was found submerged in Island Lake in Fredenburg Township, Minnesota.

On Friday evening, the St. Louis County sheriff's office received a report from 79-year-old Darlene Lukovsky's family saying she was supposed to be home long ago. Family said she was last known to be at the grocery store in Duluth and would have been traveling to her home off the west side of Island Lake in Fredenburg Township.

She talked to family at about 1:30 p.m. and said she was heading home from the store. Around 1 a.m., when family and sheriff's deputies searched her likely route, they found her car submerged in Island Lake.

It was foggy out at the time Lukovsky would have been traveling, and authorities believe she may have lost her way. It appears she missed a curve in the road and drove into the water.

The sheriff's office is still investigating the incident.

Lukovsky was to turn 80 years old on Sunday.
