A train derailed in Cottonwood, Minn. Friday night, spilling 23 loads of corn across the tracks, according to a Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway spokeswoman.

A BSNF official said the derailment happened around 6:30 p.m. on the railroad parallel to Barstad Road in Cottonwood.

The train did not block the road, but BSNF, along with local law enforcement, closed Barstad so workers could stage cleanup efforts. Crews are working to remove the cars and the corn and repair the tracks.

The train was headed northbound toward Willmar.

No one was injured.

"We're sorry for the impact this has on the town and have been communicating with local officials, and are working as quickly and safely as possible to restore the area," said Amy McBeth, a BSNF spokeswoman in an email.

The cause of the derailment is still under investigation.
