Gold dust, diamonds stolen from Macalester College display case

Gold dust, diamonds and other precious stones and minerals were reported stolen from a display case at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn. Tuesday evening, according to St. Paul police.

The theft was reported around 6:00 p.m. by a lab supervisor, who was working in the college's science building when he noticed the geological samples were missing from one of the building’s display cases, St. Paul police spokesperson Steve Linders said.

The electronic, spinning display case contained samples of gold dust, silver, meteorites, platinum, diamonds and other types of precious stones and minerals. The value of the stolen items remains unknown.

Police are not sure when the theft actually occurred, but Linders said it appears the items could have been stolen anytime in the last week.

St. Paul police are investigating the theft and expect to release more information on Wednesday afternoon.
