Cris Carter apologizes for 'fall guy' advice to NFL rookies

(KMSP) - ESPN NFL analyst and former Viking Cris Carter apologized on Sunday for advising young players at a rookie symposium to have a “fall guy in your crew” in case the player got in trouble.

Carter talked to players, including quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, at the NFC session during a 2014 NFL Rookie Symposium, and his commentary was revealed by former San Francisco 49er Chris Borland in a recent ESPN the Magazine interview. Video from the symposium had been posted on NFL.com with Carter and Warren Sapp speaking with players, where Carter mentioned having a “fall guy," and Sapp reiterating "we'll get him out" in case the player goes to jail. The video was later removed from the website.

"We completely disagree with Cris's remarks and we have made that extremely clear to him. Those views were entirely his own and do not reflect our company's point of view in any way,” ESPN said in a statement.

"The comment was not representative of the message of the symposium or any other league program. The league's player engagement staff immediately expressed concern about the comment to Cris. The comment was not repeated in the 2014 AFC session or this year's symposium,” the NFL said in a statement.

On Sunday night, Carter apologized on Twitter.
