St. Paul police hosted their first Women in Uniform recruitment event on Saturday, hoping to teach women about careers in law enforcement.

According to police, St. Paul's population is 51 percent women and girls, but most officers are men.

Assistant Chief Kathy Wuorinen, a 28-year veteran of the force, became the department's first female chief when she served in an interim role a few years ago.

“We are under-represented in law enforcement," she said. "I am thrilled that so many people came out today, because I believe we can change policing."

The event is part of St. Paul's Step Forward campaign to engage the community. More info can be found here.
