Minneapolis cop makes threats, group says they were racially profiled

A Minneapolis police officer was recorded on camera swearing and threatening to break a teenager's legs during a traffic stop in March. An internal police investigation is underway and there are calls for the Department of Justice to look into it.

BACK STORY: Cop: 'If you f--- with me, I'm going to break your leg'

"Plain and simple, if you f--- with me, I'm going to break your leg before you get the chance to run. I'm being honest I don't screw around," the officer was recorded saying.

Fox 9 had an exclusive interview with the young men involved who are now coming forward to tell their story. Quite frankly, they weren't sure what the initial response to the video would be and said they were scared. Now, they believe sharing their story is in their best interest and will protect them down the line.

On March 18, the young men said they left Casablanca Foods in south Minneapolis, made a U-turn into a church parking lot and headed towards 33rd and Pillsbury. That's when police pulled them over, forced them out and put them in handcuffs.

"They had their guns drawn," Liban Yusuf, 18, said. "I don't know why they were so aggressive."

17-year-old Faysal Mohamed said at first they were wondering what they even did to get pulled over.

For the next 45 minutes, they endured a search of their vehicle and background checks. Then eventually let go. Officers said they were suspected of grand theft auto.

The young men say they're still recovering from the startling traffic stop in south Minneapolis last month.

"I think we got stopped you know, our racial profile."

The driver that day, 17-year-old Kahin Abdiwahid, was unavailable for an interview because he's now in juvenile hall. After being on home arrest for his alleged involvement in a fight, his parole officer says his encounter that day with police was a direct violation of his probation, which gave him limited movement.

His mother, who wants to remain anonymous, spoke to Fox 9 on the phone.

"It's okay for me if they stop him, but it's not okay for me how the police interact with the kids," she said.

The Minneapolis police officer caught making threats to the teens is Rod Webber. Minneapolis police only confirmed that there is an internal investigation underway and cannot comment at this time. The young men are planning on filing a complaint with police on Monday.

"Now that we have the community and strong people behind us, we feel like we should step up even more," Yusuf said.
