I-35W to close Nov. 9-12 in Minneapolis

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, Interstate 35W will close in both directions between Interstate 94 and Highway 62 in Minneapolis as crews demolish the 28th Street bridge. The interstate will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.

According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, crews will begin closing the on and off ramps for I-35W about one hour before closing the interstate. Southbound I-35W will be open to traffic south of 46th Street.

Drivers will be detoured around the closure using Interstate 394, Highway 100 and Highway 62.

Additionally, the 28th Street bridge spanning I-35W will close around 6 a.m. Friday. The new 28th Street bridge is expected to open in June 2019. The detour will be southbound Blaisdell Avenue to eastbound Lake Street to northbound Fifth Avenue South.

The pedestrian detour uses First Avenue South, 26th Street and Fifth Avenue South.

The reconstructed 26th Street bridge will reopen on Friday, Nov. 9.

MnDOT anticipates one additional weekend closure of I-35W from Nov. 16-19 to complete underground utility work that cannot be done in conjunction with the 28th Street bridge demolition. Construction work on the 28th Street bridge and throughout the 35W@94 project area will continue through the winter.
