CARAG neighborhood votes to change name to South Uptown

A Minneapolis neighborhood is taking steps to change its name.

The CARAG neighborhood is just blocks away from Bde Maka Ska. However, the CARAG acronym stands for Calhoun Area Residents Action Group, which still reflects the lake's previous name. Earlier this year, Lake Calhoun's name was officially changed to its original Dakota name Bde Maka Ska.

To reflect that change, the neighborhood decided come up with a new name and put it to a vote. At the neighborhood's annual meeting Tuesday, residents voted between Bryant Square and South Uptown. In a close race, South Uptown emerged the winner in a 78 to 71 vote. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey was also in attendance for the event.

While the vote may be final, the name change is not yet official. The new name needs to be recommended to the City of Minneapolis, which then would make the decision to approve it.
