CARAG neighborhood in Minneapolis on hunt for new name, dropping 'Calhoun'

- A Minneapolis neighborhood is looking for a new name now that Lake Calhoun has officially become Bde Maka Ska, the original Dakota name for the lake.

The CARAG neighborhood is bounded by West Lake Street, Hennepin Avenue, Lyndale Avenue and West 36th Street and is only blocks from Bde Maka Ska. CARAG is an acronym for Calhoun Area Residents Action Group.

Changing Lake Calhoun to Bde Maka Ska has “eliminated part of the reason for the CARAG acronym,” according to the neighborhood website.

CARAG is asking residents to help settle on a new name for the neighborhood that better communicates their location in Minneapolis.

Twelve name ideas have already been proposed: Bryant Square, Henn-Lake, Henn-Lyn, Lakewood, Lower Uptown, Lyn-Lake, Lyn-Town, Uptown Corners, Uptown East, South Uptown, Uptown Square or keeping the name the same. Residents are invited to rate the options in a survey.

There is no word yet on when CARAG plans to adopt its new name.
