The overturning was a result of misconduct by a county clerk that tainted the jury process. During the press conference, Murdaugh's lead defense attorneys, Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin, announced a federal civil rights lawsuit against former clerk Rebecca Hill to hold her accountable. The attorneys also questioned the state's potential pursuit of the death penalty, firmly rejected the possibility of a plea deal, and addressed uninvestigated DNA evidence ahead of an expected retrial.
