Wisconsin carjacking suspect killed in officer-involved shooting

A man was killed in an officer-involved shooting after he stole a woman's car Sunday evening in La Crosse, Wis., taking police on a chase with her 1-year-old child still inside.

Police were dispatched to Houska Park around 5 p.m. on a report of a carjacking. According to a release, the suspect, 54-year-old Roger Burzinski of Green Bay, displayed a handgun and stole the woman's vehicle. While the woman was able to get herself and her 3-year-old child out of the car, her 1-year-old was still in her car seat when he drove off.

Officers located the stolen car at the intersection of 10th Street and Green Bay Street, attempting to stop it before Burzinski continued driving and crashed into a parked car.

Officers "gave orders to the suspect but he was refusing to obey officers' commands," the release said. As officers approached the car, they noticed Burzinski had a weapon.

According to the release, officers "continued to give demands and ultimately fired their weapons at the suspect."

Burzinski died of his injuries.

Despite the impact, the child was found safe in the vehicle and was treated at the scene for minor injuries before being released to the mother.

Authorities will release more information in the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigations report. Per department policy, the two officers involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave pending review of the investigation.
