Permit to carry holder shoots man during robbery in St. Paul

A permit to carry holder shot an 18-year-old man who allegedly robbed him Thursday evening, according to St. Paul police.

Kendrick Johntavious Maddox of Minneapolis is now charged with first degree aggravated robbery.

According to Sgt. Mike Ernster, around 5:30 p.m. on the 1100 block of Rice Street, the two men met up for the sale of the iPhone X. They made the arrangements over Facebook.

According to the criminal complaint, when the alleged victim began to count his money to prove he had $500 to buy the phone, Maddox pulled out a gun and took the man's money. The man, who happened to be a permit to carry holder, took out his .357 revolver and shot Maddox, who ran away. Police confirmed the man has a valid permit.

Within the hour, Maddox showed up for treatment at Regions Hospital for a gunshot wound to the foot. He originally told police he was walking around when he got hit by a stray bullet. He also denied being a part of any Facebook conversation to sell an iPhone.

The man with the permit to carry told police "he feared for his life and fired in self-defense." He also showed police Facebook messages he received from an account with a username associated with Maddox's account. The man also picked out Maddox from a photo lineup.

Maddox is currently in custody at Ramsey County Jail.
