Jacob Wetterling memorial service set for Sept. 25

Jacob Wetterling

The Wetterling Family Memorial Service for Jacob Wetterling will be held at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25 at the College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn. Additional details will will be announced in the near future.

The initial plans were shared Friday afternoon by the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University. In 2009, on the 20th anniversary of Jacob’s disappearance, the Wetterling family hosted a “Concert for Children” at St. Ben’s.

In a statement following the recovery of Jacob's remains, Patty Wetterling said there are a few things we can all do to bring comfort to the family:

Say a prayer
Light a candle
Be with friends
Play with your children
Hold Hands
Eat ice cream
Create joy
Help your neighbor

The Minnesota Twins, the Gophers football team and several high school and youth sports teams are wearing Jacob's No. 11 in his honor. The Wetterling family asks that anyone wearing No. 11 for Jacob make a commitment to living with these 11 traits:

1. Be Fair
2. Be Kind
3. Be Understanding
4. Be Honest
5. Be Thankful
6. Be a Good Sport
7. Be a Good Friend
8. Be Joyful
9. Be Generous
10. Be Gentle with others
11. Be Positive

Jacob Wetterling was abducted back in 1989 near his St. Joseph home. Court documents say he was taken at gunpoint by a masked man when he was just 11 years old. The case changed the way parents discussed stranger danger with their children, and launched Patty Wetterling's 27-year quest to find her son and prevent the abduction and exploitation of any other children.

Danny Heinrich of Annandale, Minn. was an early suspect in the abduction, and this week -- nearly 27 years after Jacob was abducted -- Heinrich confessed to the kidnapping and murder of Jacob Wetterling. Heinrich led investigators to a farm property near Paynesville, Minn., where they recovered his remains. IN-DEPTH - Jacob Wetterling's remains found, 27 years after abduction
