What they're saying:
Bill Peterson, the interim police chief for the Minneapolis Police Department, issued the following statement after a violent weekend:
"The Fourth of July is historically our busiest day of the year, and this weekend was no exception. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of our public safety partners, there was a strong and visible police presence throughout the city. Despite these efforts, several shootings occurred, including one tragic homicide. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected.
"We will not tolerate violence in our community. Our investigators are working diligently to identify everyone responsible and ensure they are held accountable.
Increased enforcement and proactive partnerships helped prevent additional harm, including the recovery of numerous illegal firearms over the weekend. Our priority remains clear: ensuring that residents and community members feel safe in their homes, in their neighborhoods, and across the city."
