High school hockey coach and Lakeville police officer in ICU after hitting head on ice

The hockey community is coming together after a coach fell on the ice and hit his head. On Sunday night, he was in the ICU fighting for his life at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Holy Family Catholic High School Hockey Coach in ICU

Jason Jensen is a husband, father, Lakeville police officer and Holy Family Catholic High School hockey coach. Everyone is doing what they can to help his family during this difficult time. They say Jensen is someone who helps everyone, now he needs their support.

Hearing from his family

What they're saying:

"He's my best friend. I have known my husband for over 20 years," said Kelly Jensen, Jason’s wife.

Jason’s wife Kelly says her husband was injured while coaching hockey Friday night. He fell and hit his head on the ice, and the fall fractured his skull, which caused bleeding in his brain.

"I'm hoping that this is just a bump in the road, and we will get him back to normal. But I just, I need him to fight for me and our kids," said Kelly.

Jason has two children, a 14-year-old son and a 9-year-old daughter. As of Sunday, he’s in critical condition.

"They need to measure the pressure in his brain, and so they had to put a drain in his brain. He is been intubated, and so he's hanging in there," said Kelly.

How Jason impacts the community

Local perspective:

As a police officer, it’s Jason’s job to protect and serve Lakeville. Now the men and women in blue are doing what they can to protect and serve him.

"He doesn’t like attention, he wouldn’t be the one to reach out for it. But he needs the support right now. He needs people to rally," said Brad Paulson, Lakeville Police Chief.

Along with the Holy Family Catholic High School hockey community and other school teams as well.

"He’s just someone that gives a lot of his time to help people, and never asks for anything in return," said Sean Bloomfield, head coach for the Chanhassen boy’s hockey team.

"He comes over here and gives back with three different teams. He doesn’t have to do that. He’s doing that, because he’s a good guy," said Randy Koeppl, head coach for the Holy Family Catholic High School Girl’s hockey team.

How you can support

What you can do:

Jason’s wife says he wasn’t wearing a helmet when he fell on the ice. It's not required in high school hockey, and now the coaches will make helmets mandatory for staff after Jason’s fall.
