Blizzard warnings for North Dakota amid heavy snow, sleet

A major winter storm is expected to bring blizzard-like conditions to North Dakota and South Dakota Thursday and Friday, as well as snow and ice in northwestern Minnesota.

Minnesota weather: Winter is coming

We all knew it would happen eventually, that permanent dip into frozen temperatures, but this year appears like it's going to happen earlier than much of the last decade.

Despite the light rain earlier this week, the dry conditions in the Twin Cities and much of the southern half of the state continue to get worse. That's after one of the driest 5 month stretches on record, with little relief in sight. Lake Minnetonka is at its lowest water level since 2000, and other waterways are also well below normal.

Sunday will be humid and windy, with highs reaching the mid to upper 70s. A cold front will start to move in Sunday evening and could spark some isolated storms in parts of the state.

September 2022 is the driest September on record for the Twin Cities

Well, if you've spent any time in Minnesota in September over the years, you know we can get and have had just about everything. From high heat and humidity to very gusty winds, plenty of rain, and even some snowflakes. This year though, it's been more of the same; warm and VERY dry. Dry enough in fact, that we're finishing up our driest September on record in the Twin Cities. That's not good, considering we just finished one of the driest summers on record.

A cloudy and rainy Friday will continue into Saturday, though it will be slightly warmer with a high of 65 degrees. Some sprinkles might hang around, with wind expected to follow Sunday.

Wildfire smoke from the west is moving into Minnesota on Thursday, making things look a bit hazy. This is mid- to upper-level smoke though, so it shouldn't smell too smoky. FOX 9's Cody Matz has more.

Flood Watch issued for SE Minnesota until Sunday morning

Storms will develop in Iowa later Saturday afternoon and move into south Minnesota by Saturday evening and eventually west Wisconsin. Some of these storms may find their way toward the Twin Cities metro, but southeast Minnesota is the main area of concern. Because of the deep moisture content in the atmosphere, any storms that develop tonight have a chance of producing heavy rain. Therefore, a Flood Watch has been issued for southeast Minnesota until 7 a.m. Sunday.
