He initially faced multiple counts including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit federal programs bribery, federal programs bribery, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and money laundering.
Family fraud enterprise
The backstory:
The family opened multiple food sites under the sponsorship of Feeding our Future and falsely claimed to serve millions of meals to children during the pandemic to collect money from the federal child nutrition program.
Dig deeper:
Suleman Mohamed is the fifth member of the Mohamed family to plead guilty in the Feeding our Future fraud scheme.
Prosecutors say the family bilked $14 million from the childhood nutrition program through Feeding our Future. Suleman Mohamed's brother Gandi Mohamed is the remaining defendant in the family's case.
Failed drug test
Delayed hearing:
His plea hearing was originally set to take place on Monday, but the hearing was pushed back to Thursday after he tested positive multiple times in March for cocaine and oxycodone during probation drug tests in March. According to court documents, Mohamed admitted to using both drugs. He also told probation officers he didn't have a valid prescription for the oxycodone.
As a result of the failed drug test, Mohamed had his pre-trial release revoked.
What's next:
Gandi rejected a plea deal and is set to move forward with trial later this month.
