Families enjoy weekend events despite lack of winter snow
ST. PAUL, Minn. (FOX 9) - Around the Twin Cities, Minnesotans are finding things to do this winter, even without snow on the ground.
St. Paul winter events
Big picture view:
St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey kicked off the weekend by serving as honorary team captains for the first ever Mayor’s Cup Game at TRIA Rink in St. Paul.
"We know that we’re a cold-weather community. It gets cold sometimes, the Minnesota mantra is there’s no such thing as bad weather, but only insufficient clothing, so you can put on a coat, put on some boots, and we’re going to be outside," St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter said.
The mayors then stopped by the Minnesota State Capitol, where, once again, Red Bull set up shop for this year’s Red Bull Heavy Metal snowboarding competition event.
"It’s not bad. I’m staying warm enough," athlete Ryan Paul told FOX 9.
Simultaneous events happen in Minneapolis
The other side:
In Minneapolis at Theodore Wirth Park, plenty of people also gathered in the elements for the start of the City of Lakes Loppet Winter Festival.
The event showcases cross-country skiing, fat biking, snowshoeing, and more.
Organizers spent months amassing artificial snow.
"They’ve done a really good job despite not having a normal winter," Kent Malcomson said. "It’s generally good conditions, despite little or no snow."
