Rescue teams are trying to locate an air ambulance that went missing after it departed from Bermuda overnight, along with the six people on board, while en route to Boston.

Big picture view:

The U.S. Coast Guard deployed search teams on the water and in the air after being alerted to the missing Gulfstream G100. It explained that the Federal Aviation Administration indicated that contact with the jet, which was registered in Canada, was lost early Saturday morning.

The backstory:

Four crew members and two passengers were aboard the air ambulance when the plane took off from Bermuda’s L.F. Wade Airport, on its way to Massachusetts, the airport operator, Skyport, explained in a statement. According to the Coast Guard, the search is focused in the area off the coast of Nantucket, about 100 miles south of Boston.

What's next:

The National Transportation Safety Board stated Saturday that it was still gathering information about the missing plane, but did not have an update to share.
