26-year-old man killed in crash after police chase in Hayward, Wis.

A 26-year-old man died Saturday after he lost control of his car and crashed while fleeing police in Hayward, Wisconsin. 

At 2:20 a.m., an officer with the Hayward Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation. The vehicle refused to stop and led the officer on a short chase.

The suspect vehicle continued onto Wisconsin Highway 77 at speeds of over 100 miles per hour.  At one point, the vehicle’s lights turned off and officers lost sight of the suspect vehicle. 

A short time later, the vehicle was located in a wooded area near the intersection of Highway 77 and Foley Road outside Hayward. The driver appeared to have lost control of the vehicle and it left the read. 

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released. 

The incident remains under investigation.
