MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - It’s a bitterly cold start Tuesday, but temperatures will climb above zero and light snowflakes could make an appearance by the evening.

What to expect:
A frigid air mass remains in place Tuesday morning with subzero temperatures and dangerously cold wind chills. The Twin Cities reached a low of minus 19 degrees, the coldest actual air temperatures in a couple of years.
An extreme cold warning remains in effect for the metro until 10 a.m. as dangerously cold wind chills reach 35 to 40 degrees below zero. The cold weather has prompted several school districts in Minnesota and western Wisconsin to cancel or delay classes on Tuesday.
By the afternoon, a southwest flow brings temperatures back above zero degrees. The Twin Cities metro daytime high is 7 degrees, accompanied by a southwest breeze at 10-15 mph.
Expect a sunny start to the day before cloud cover increases in the afternoon. A clipper system could bring light snowflakes by the evening hours.

What's next:
Clouds will linger through Wednesday as temperatures warm into the mid-20s. A stray flurry or snowflake also can’t be ruled out.
On Thursday, the region will tap into arctic air again, resulting in a chilly but sunny day with highs in the teens.
A warming trend returns on Friday and into the weekend, with temperatures rebounding closer to seasonable in the 20s.
