Metro New Orleans has received more snowfall since the start of meteorological winter than many cold-weather cities across the country, including Philadelphia, New York and Anchorage, Alaska.

As the historic winter storm that traveled across the southern U.S. heads east, it's leaving snowfall from Texas to North Carolina. This image was captured by a NOAA satellite showing several inches of snow left on the ground.

The heaviest snowfall in the Sunshine State occurred around Pensacola, where spotters reported measuring amounts of 5-12 inches through Tuesday evening.

The scene along Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans on Tuesday was surreal. Palm trees swayed in the wind amid falling snow and near-blizzard conditions, with wind gusts exceeding 45 mph.

Record-breaking snow accumulation was reported across the Florida Panhandle and prompted the Florida Highway Patrol to shut down some major roadways by early Tuesday evening.

The National Weather Service office in Lake Charles, Louisiana, said the winter storm has been producing blizzard conditions across southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana.

With extreme cold expected on Tuesday, many school districts in Minnesota and western Wisconsin have decided to cancel or delay classes for Tuesday.

Minnesotans are no stranger to subzero temperatures, so the minus signs over the weekend aren't anything unusual. But as we get through Monday and early Tuesday, our cold snap peaks with numbers that appear far less frequently.

Lake Harriet’s Art Shanty Projects opened late on Sunday. Organizers kept visitors away because of extremely cold weather in the morning.

The bitter cold will last through Tuesday before milder and more seasonable temperatures return for the latter half of the week.
