MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - The Dallas Mavericks and L.A. Lakers sent shockwaves around the NBA late Saturday night, with Luka Doncic being traded to L.A. for Anthony Davis, and other assets.
Doncic led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals last season, and torched the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference Finals on the path there. After Monday night’s loss to the Sacramento Kings, Timberwolves’ players Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert were each surprised by the move.
Moreso, that Doncic didn’t even know he was being dealt until the trade happened. Edwards said if that ever happened in Minnesota, he hoped the communication would be better with Tim Connelly.
"I’m scared. Tim if you’re going to trade me, let me know dawg," Edwards joked in the locker room. "When Luka got traded, anybody is able to get traded. At 25, they traded probably the best scorer in the NBA."
What Timberwolves’ fans should remember here is that when Karl-Anthony Towns got traded to the New York Knicks just before training camp, Connelly went to Towns’ home in-person to deliver the news before it got out publicly.
Edwards shouldn’t have anything to worry about, he was the No. 1 overall draft pick and is the face of the Timberwolves.
Timberwolves players shocked by Luka Doncic, Anthony Davis trade
Timberwolves players Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Mike Conley Jr. reacted at shootaround Monday to the trade involving Luka Doncic and Anthony Davis that sent shockwaves across the NBA. Anthony Edwards was also back on the court after missing Saturday's loss due to illness.
‘It says a lot about the state of the game’
What they're saying:
Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert also spoke about the Doncic/Davis trade Monday night.
He’s familiar with big trades. Connelly made a blockbuster deal to bring Gobert to Minnesota before the 2022-23 season. He won the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year last season as the Timberwolves got to the Western Conference Finals for the first time in two decades.
Doncic hit a step-back 3-pointer over Gobert to win Game 2 of that series last year.
"It was hard to believe it at first. There’s fake accounts that post that stupid stuff every day. It’s crazy, it’s possible there’s something we don’t know," Gobert said. "It says a lot about the state of the game right now and the way a young superstar is not untouchable."
