UPDATE: Fatal crash causes shutdown on I-494 near MSP Airport

Two women have died after a fatal crash took place on Interstate 494 West and Highway 5 near MSP Airport around 8:30 p.m. on Friday night. The crash caused a temporary shutdown on I-494.

According to Minnesota State Patrol, a Jeep was traveling west on Highway 5 on the ramp to 494 when it collided head-on with a Chevrolet Malibu that was traveling the wrong way on I-494.

The two who died in the crash are 51-year-old Dawn Chiodo of Bloomington and 24-year-old Dylan Bailey of Bloomington. The other occupants, including Bailey's 2-year-old son, suffered serious injuries. It is unknown if the boy was wearing a seat belt, but all other individuals were belted.

The driver of the Chevrolet Malibu, 34-year-old Patrick Hayes of Savage, Minnesota, suffered non-life threatening injuries. State records show few traffic violations for Hayes, including careless driving in 2003, speeding in 2006 and a seat belt violation in 2010.

According to the patrol, it is unknown if there was alcohol in his system.

MSP Airport Police, Bloomington Police and the Hennepin County sheriff's office all assisted in the response.
