Univ. of Minn. student missing in river near St. Anthony Falls

Crews are searching the Mississippi River for a University of Minnesota student who went missing in near St. Anthony Falls Tuesday night.

Chris Stanley, 22, went missing Tuesday evening around 8 p.m. A friend told officers that he and Stanley climbed a fence in Water Power Park in order to sit along the Mississippi River, according to Robin Smothers, spokesperson for the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board.

The friend said a large “wave” came and swept him into the river and over St. Anthony Falls. He was able to pull himself out, but could not locate Stanley.

The friend was transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center after talking with police.

The Hennepin County sheriff’s office resumed searching the search for Stanley in the river at 7 a.m. on Wednesday. The Minneapolis Park Police Department is investigating the incident.
