St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman will not seek re-election in 2017.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) - Three-term St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman announced Thursday he will not seek re-election in 2017.
Coleman held a press conference at Lake Monster Brewing on Thursday regarding his "political future." At the press conference, Coleman’s staff touted his 11 years as mayor, citing his weathering of the financial recession as well as his recent accomplishments, such as the light rail and the awarding of a Major League Soccer franchise to the city.
“What I have loved the most about this journey is that we have never lost sight of what Saint Paul is," Coleman said in his speech on Thursday. "This scrappy Midwest town has emerged from the shadow of the big city to the west and become a true twin of the Twin Cities by being true to itself.”
Coleman added there is still work yet to be done in the city, including the opening of the Palace Theater, construction on the new MLS stadium, continued work at the former Ford site and work around racial equity.
“I know the work will continue well into the future because of all of you, you who love the city as much as I do, you who believe in the city as much as I do," Coleman said.
Although Coleman will not seek re-election, several people told Fox 9 they believe his days in public service are not yet over.
