A St. Cloud man who was hit by a vehicle in Kansas while participating in a cross country bike race has died from his injuries, according to his family.

On June 14, John Egbers was hit by a vehicle just outside Scott City, Kansas, according to his CaringBridge page. His injuries included a spinal cord fracture, a broken leg and arm.

He had been riding in the Trans Am Bike Race, which runs about 4,300 miles across the U.S. He was in 31st place at the time of the crash.

He passed away from his injuries on Thursday.

Egbers' wife, Susan, told Fox 9 she hopes her husband's passing reminds drivers to stay attentive on the roads.

"We want his story to bring awareness to pay attention to the road do not let anything distract you," she said. "Not eating a hamburger, not tuning the radio, not using your cellphone. We do not know why the person who hit him did not see him. We do know that it was broad daylight on a road that is straight and you can see for miles and miles."
