Police: Group of runaway minors stole, crashed car near Inver Grove Heights

Two minors from South Dakota were taken into custody and four more more were injured after reportedly stealing a car and leading police on a chase near Inver Grove Heights, Minn., an incident that ultimately ended with a crash causing serious injury to the driver of another vehicle.

The driver was charged with criminal operation of a motorvehicle, fleeing police and possession of stolen property, with more charges against the group expected in the near future.

Police believe the six juveniles are runaways from the Sioux Falls, N.D., area who stole the car in Eagan, Minn., around 6:00 a.m. Thursday.

Authorities first caught up with them on Highway 55, with the group fleeing and police losing sight of the vehicle shortly after. A few minutes later the six runaways were involved in a crash with another vehicle near the corner of 80th Street and Barnes Avenue in Inver Grove Heights, fleeing that scene as well.

The woman driving the car had to be extricated and was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, while an infant in the backseat was in a car seat and did not appear to suffer any harm.

After police located the group, four of the minors were subsequently transported to the hospital for minor injuries and one was booked into the Dakota County Juvenile Detention Center until his parents arrived.

The incident is still under investigation.
