The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death of a corrections officer, who died after responding to an inmate assault in September, as a homicide.

On Sept. 24, Oak Park Heights Corrections Officer Joseph Parise, 37, had helped his fellow officers respond to an inmate assault. When Parise returned to his post, he had a medical emergency. He later died at the hospital.

Parise was the second corrections officer to die in the line of duty this summer. In July, an inmate brutally beat Corrections Officer Joseph Gomm to death at the Stillwater prison.
