North Branch carjacking suspect dead after officer-involved shooting

One man is dead after a carjacking led to an officer-involved shooting in Chisago County Monday morning.

Chisago County deputies were called to assist North Branch Police on a report of a suspicious person. That call was eventually updated to a carjacking after the man stole a vehicle at gunpoint from a woman who was on her way to work.

FIRST REPORT: Suspect sought in armed carjacking in North Branch, Minn.

The suspect, who had his seven-year-old daughter with him at the time he stole the car, ended up driving the stolen car to rural Fish Lake Township about 15 miles north of North Branch.

Shortly before 10 a.m., the suspect called OnStar and asked someone come pick his daughter up. He was also making suicidal threats at the time.

When officers arrived, the suspect was located and police fired several shots.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

His daughter was in the vehicle at the time of the shooting. She was not injured during the incident.

Authorities have not released the suspect’s name yet pending notification of family. He did not live in North Branch, according to police.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the officer-involved shooting. No further details about the shooting have been released, but the North Branch Police Department, Chisago County sheriff's office and the Minnesota State Patrol were all on the scene.
