Here's how many Americans say they'll go into debt for football

Few things unite Americans like their love of football, and a new survey reveals how many Americans plan to go into debt over it.

Last month, LendingTree asked 2,000 Americans about their spending plans this football season

While about two-thirds of Americans said they’ll spend money on the nation’s favorite game, it’s clear that economic uncertainty is impacting plans, leaving many people expecting to take on debt along the way, according to the company.

Nearly two-thirds of Americans plan to spend money on football this season

By the numbers:

LendingTree found that 65% of respondents expect to shell out money this football season, specifically on food, alcohol or tailgating (32%), merchandise (31%), streaming packages (28%), live game tickets (24%) and travel (20%). In addition, 37% expect to spend four hours or longer weekly engaging with football content.

Meanwhile, more than half of football spenders may also take on related debt, with one in four (26%) saying they will, and 25% saying they might.

The survey also found that 15% of spenders said they plan to use buy now, pay later (BNPL) for football expenses, led generationally by Gen Zers (24%) and millennials (17%).

Millennials ages 29 to 44 were the most likely age group to say so, at 34%, while men were significantly more likely than women to say the same (31% versus 19%).
