Gas leak in downtown Belle Plaine leads to evacuations

The Belle Plaine Mayor says 'numerous' people have been evacuated from homes and businesses due to a gas leak in downtown Belle Plaine.

Mayor Christopher Meyer says around 6 p.m. Wednesday a construction crew was digging in an alley in the 100 block of South Meridian when workers chipped the main gas line. As of 10:30 p.m., the line has not been capped by CenterPoint Energy. Meyers says crews will be working to fix the line overnight.

Authorities are evacuating people within 300 feet of the leak. Officials are asking people to stay out of the area.

People who need a place to stay can go to Chatfield Elementary.

Officials will be giving updates on social media and through Nixle.
