Father, son die after kayak overturns on northern Minnesota lake

A four-year-old boy and his father from Iowa died after their kayak overturned on a lake in northern Minnesota Saturday afternoon.

At 1:26 p.m., the Hubbard County sheriff’s office received a report of two kayakers on Hart Lake that had overturned their kayak and never resurfaced. Emergency responders located the kayak upside down, but saw no sign of the two victims.

A four-year-old boy from Northwood, Iowa was located in the water a short time later. He was taken to a nearby hospital and later airlifted to a hospital in Minneapolis, where he died the following day after he was taken off life support.

Emergency responders continued to search for the boy’s father, 42-year-old Jesse Anderson. Authorities suspended the search Saturday night due to weather conditions and darkness, but it resumed early Sunday morning. Around 10:53 a.m., searchers located Anderson’s body in approximately six feet of water.

Neither victim was wearing a life jacket.
