Edina man selling yard signs to raise money for police
EDINA, Minn. (KMSP) - Yard signs showing support of local law enforcement are popping up all over the Twin Cities.
In Edina, around two hundred signs are peppered in residential neighborhoods. The sale of the signs has raised $500 in three weeks.
"Now when I'm driving down the street I see sign after sign in people's yards,” said Edina officer Darin Cizek. “It makes me want to come back to work tomorrow."
The man who created the campaign, Edina resident Greg Daggett, said he was looking for a way to give back to his community when he saw similar signs in St. Louis Park.
"It was kind of on a whim,” said Daggett, who moved to Edina two-and-a-half years ago. “Three weeks ago, we decided in an hour—we went onto a website, bought the signs, and a week later they showed up on a pallet at my door.”
Daggett’s brother and two cousins are police officers, but he has no connection to the Edina department.
"It's important to make sure they remember that everyone they serve appreciates and respects what they do,” he said.
"If it wasn't for Greg and his family, none of this would have started,” said Cizek. "It took one person to take it upon himself to show his support and ultimately has grown into what it is today."
Daggett has sold around 200 signs in three weeks, and has gained more than 1,300 likes on the Facebook page. Recently, the city council has asked him to join with the Edina Crime Prevention Fund and the Edina Police Department at local events.
All proceeds from the sales go to the Edina Crime Prevention Fund.
