Deputy shoots, kills 23-year-old man in Lake Elmo, Minn.

Washington County sheriff's deputies shot and killed a 23-year-old man in Lake Elmo, Minnesota early Thursday morning. 

Shortly after midnight, the Washington County Sheriff's office received a call of a man making suicidal comments. Deputies found the man near the intersection of Lake Elmo Avenue and 34th Street North. He was armed with a handgun. 

Deputies talked with the man in an attempt to de-escalate the situation, according to the sheriff's office. At some point, deputies used "less lethal ammunition." One deputy eventually fired his weapon at the man. 

Life-saving efforts were administered at the scene, but the victim was taken to Regions Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the shooting. It is not clear whether the incident was captured on body camera or dash camera video.
