Cigarette fire causes $60,000 in damage to St. Cloud apartment

A fire started by a cigarette left one person dead and caused $60,000 in damages to an apartment in St. Cloud, Minnesota Thursday evening.

At 7:14 p.m., firefighters were called to an apartment building on the 1500 block of Sherburne Drive Southeast on a report of a fire. The lone occupant of the apartment was injured in the fire and transported to the St. Cloud Hospital, according to St. Cloud Fire Department Chief Dean Wrobbel.

Teresa Margaret Kelly-Schroepfer, 57, died Friday from injuries she sustained in the fire.

No one else was injured and no other apartments were damaged. The other residents of the building were let back into their apartments a few hours later.

Investigators determined the fire was accidental and was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.
