BCA investigating deadly officer-involved shooting in Virginia, Minn.

A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting Tuesday in Virginia, Minnesota.

Around 5 p.m., Virginia police officers and St. Louis County sheriff’s deputies responded to the 300 block of 2nd Street South after a woman reported a man approached her stopped vehicle and told her to get out, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The man, identified as 41-year-old J Scot Alan Widmark of Virginia, got in the vehicle, but then got out and grabbed a man who was standing on the sidewalk. When officers arrived, Widmark was still holding the other man.

At one point during the encounter, Virginia Police Officer Nick Grivna fired his weapon, striking Widmark. An ambulance took Widmark to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police found a knife at the scene where the shooting happened.

Officer Grivna has been placed on standard administrative leave. He has been with the department for nearly five years.

The officers were not wearing body cameras. The BCA is working to determine whether squad cameras captured the shooting.

The BCA is investigating the incident. When the investigation is complete, the BCA will turn its findings over to the St. Louis County Attorney’s Office for review.
