St. Paul police are investigating a shooting that left one person dead and another injured Sunday night.

According to police, officers patrolling the Payne-Phalen neighborhood on the city's east side heard multiple gun shots just after 9 p.m. and immediately responded to the intersection of Payne Avenue and Jessamine Avenue East. There, they found two victims in a vehicle.

Officers secured the scene and immediately called for St. Paul Fire medics, who responded and transported both victims to Regions Hospital. One of the victims, an adult male, died from his injuries. The other victim is currently being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The police department’s Forensic Services Unit is processing the scene, and investigators with the Homicide Unit are canvassing the area looking for witnesses or anyone who knows what led to the shooting.
