1 dead, 1 in critical condition after Minnetonka police chase
MINNETONKA, Minn. (KMSP) - One man died in a two-vehicle crash after a police chase on Minnetonka Boulevard, according to the City of Minnetonka.
Friday afternoon, just before 2 p.m., Minnetonka police began following a Mercury Tracer after noticing it was "driving at extremely high speeds." The vehicle did not pull over and avoided police. According to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, officers eventually lost sight of the vehicle headed eastbound on Minnetonka Boulevard. It is unclear whether the police called off the chase or not at that point.
Soon after, police came upon the two-vehicle crash near Atwater Street. Investigators say the Mercury Tracer tried to pass traffic by going into the westbound lane and struck a Volvo head-on.
David Baxter, 30, of Montrose, was identified as the driver of the Mercury Tracer. He died at the scene.
Emergency crews took the driver of the other vehicle, a 59-year-old Minnetonka woman, to Hennepin County Medical Center. She was still in critical condition Saturday afternoon, a hospital spokesperson told Fox 9.
Minnesota State Patrol is investigating the crash.
