Minnesota weather: Coldest air in the last few years settles in
MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - A bitter cold air mass of high pressure will slide into the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest over the next few days.
This pool of frigid air will lead to the coldest temperatures of this winter season, along with some of the coldest weather we’ve had in a few years.
Weekend forecast
By the numbers:
Our weekend is shaping up to be bitter and raw.
A relentless northwest breeze will gust into the 20s all day today and tonight, leading to wind chills in the teens to twenties below zero.
Temperatures tonight dip into the double digits below zero, which will make for the coldest temperature of this winter season so far (the coldest the airport has been is -9 degrees so far).
We dip below zero and stay below zero starting tonight through sometime late Tuesday morning.
This will likely be 60+ hours of subzero temperatures! Sunday is shaping up to be a little breezy and still very frigid.
MLK Day and into the Shortened Work Week
What's next:
The subzero weather lasts all of Monday, Monday night, and potentially through lunchtime on Tuesday.
We look to stay in the mid-single digits below zero for a high temperature on Monday with actual temperatures dipping into the teens below zero on Monday night.
Our forecast calls for -15 degrees for Tuesday morning, which will be the coldest it has been at the airport since January 2022.
We get above zero on Tuesday afternoon, but not by much.
Wednesday and onward won’t be as raw with a seasonable temperature forecast in store for the latter half of the shortened work week.
