As wildfires continue to affect Minnesota, Java Moose owner/founder Sarah Jorgenson-Hallberg joins FOX 9’s Good Day to offer an insight into current conditions and business operations along Minnesota’s north shore.

Minneapolis has the second-worst air quality in the country on Thursday morning due to ground-level smoke from wildfires in northern Minnesota and Canada. FOX 9’s Bill Keller reports.  

FOX 9 Meteorologist Cody Matz explains why wildfire smoke from northern Minnesota and Canada is causing such poor air quality. Unlike typical wildfire smoke that rises to 20,000 to 30,000 feet, this smoke is shallow and concentrated near the ground, where people live and breathe.

The heat and hazardous air quality continue across parts of Minnesota on Thursday as wildfire smoke lingers. Air quality gradually improves later in the day, while temperatures stay near 90 degrees. FOX 9 meteorologist Cody Matz has the forecast.

Over a dozen wildfires burn in northern Minnesota and the smoke is causing poor air quality. 

Wildfires continue burning across northeastern Minnesota, where 17 active fires, collectively known as the July Lightning Event, have scorched about 55,000 acres. The Boundary Waters remains closed, evacuations and rescues are underway, and Gov. Tim Walz has extended the state's peacetime emergency for another 30 days.

Several trading card and collectable stores are being targeted by thieves in the Twin Cities for the high-value cards they have in stock. FOX 9's Tim Blotz sat down with the owner of The Lost Zone Cards and Collectibles in Bloomington, which was burglarized twice.
