Vikings fan attacked by 49ers fans outside stadium

A video posted to Facebook and YouTube showed a pair of San Francisco 49ers fans attacking a Minnesota Vikings fan outside of Levi’s Stadium following Monday night’s game.

The video begins mid-assault, with a Vikings fan wearing a No. 26 Antoine Winfield jersey on his hands and knees, getting kicked and punched by two 49ers fans. A private event security staff member attempts to break up the altercation, but is overmatched by the assailants. A larger group of San Francisco fans eventually intervene and put an end to the beating.

The fight happened on the west side of Levi's Stadium near Gate C around 10:20 p.m. Monday night shortly after the home opener game let out. Police said they got a call about the fight, but say by the time they arrived everyone had left.

Santa Clara Police Lt. Kurt Clarke said they have been in touch with the victim and the investigation is making progress.

"The video helps us tremendously," said Clarke. "Obviously you can see the video and see what happened--it's not really open to interpretation. Our message is simple -- acts like this will just not be tolerated at Levi's Stadium or in the city of Santa Clara."

The uploader of the video posted the following information on Facebook:

"I'm seeing a lot of comments talking bad about the 49er fans without actually knowing what happened, so....Here's the full story: The Viking fan in the video and a 49er fan NOT in the video were talking smack to each other, getting into each others faces. A lot of fans from both sides were telling both people to stop and just walk to their cars. The Viking fan shoved his wife into a barrier to try to get to the 49er fan, then at that point the 49er fan walked away from the situation and that's when the Viking fan may have got a little cocky. The Viking fan turned around and addressed everyone behind him (mostly 49er fans). He said " what's up, any of you f------ want some?!" At that point everyone went silent for 2 seconds then as the Viking fan was turning around to walk away, the 49er fan in the black (at the beginning of the video who threw the first punch) tackled him to the ground. That's where the video starts."

The San Francisco 49ers issued a statement in response to what they call a "disturbing incident," saying they are working with police to investigate what happened.

"The 49ers and our public safety partners have a steadfast commitment to ensuring safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors to Levi's Stadium and unacceptable behavior such as this will not be tolerated," the statement read.
