Iowa Hawkeyes defeat Gophers 48-31

The battle for the bacon had some sizzle between the Gophers and Iowa in the annual meeting for Floyd of Rosedale.

The two teams combined for 79 total points, but the Hawkeyes came out on the winning side by putting up 48 points for their fourth straight victory in their rivalry with Minnesota.

Coach PJ Fleck’s October harvest isn’t as plentiful as many people would hope after a 17-point defeat against an arch rival.

In this loss to Iowa, fakes helped decide the fate: on fourth down, the Hawkeyes converted on a trick play to take a 14 point lead early in the game.

“They just ran it at the perfect time,” said player Thomas Barber.

And the Gophers couldn’t convert their own - a fake punt failed and opened the door for the Hawkeyes to take an 18-point lead into halftime.

The Gophers defense has now given up 160 points, in the last four conference games - something that will need to change to alter the final results.
