Former Gophers coach Claeys named defensive coordinator at Washington State

Former University of Minnesota head football coach Tracy Claeys is the new defensive coordinator at Washington State University.

Claeys took over the Gophers football program in November 2015, succeeding Jerry Kill, who resigned for health reasons. He joined the Minnesota coaching staff in 2011 as defensive coordinator and added the title of associate head coach in 2014.

As head coach, Claeys posted an 11-8 record with back-to-back bowl victories.

Claeys was fired by the U of M last January following a two-day boycott by the football team in response to suspensions of 10 teammates connected to an alleged early season sexual assault. The former head coach publicly voiced pride and support for the boycotting players, drawing criticism from women's groups and other victim advocates.

Prior to Minnesota, Claeys served as defensive coordinator for three seasons at Northern Illinois and seven years at Southern Illinois.
