Woman, boy found dead in Orono, Minn. home after missing child custody exchange

A 47-year-old woman and her five-year-old son were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide at a home in Orono, Minnesota Monday evening.

Officers were asked to do a welfare check at a house on the 2200 block of Bayview Place around 4 p.m. Monday after the child was not returned to his father as per a custody agreement. An officer responded to the home and nobody answered the door. The father said he would ask police to check later in the evening.

Police left without entering the home because they did not have information that indicated the child was at risk, according to the Orono Police Department.

Officers returned to the home for a second welfare check around 8 p.m. on Monday with keys provided to them from a family member. There, they found the woman and her son hanged in the basement in an apparent murder-suicide. Police identified the woman as Gina Summers, with the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office identifying the boy as Jude Summers-Sandburg.

The victims had not been heard from since Sunday.

Police do not believe there is a threat to the public and they are not seeking any suspects at this time. The deaths remain under investigation.
