St. Paul PD evacuate homes following discovery of pipe bomb, two in custody

St. Paul police are investigating after a possible explosive device was discovered in a car near Maryland Avenue and Lane Place Saturday morning.

A 911 caller reported two men with guns threatening to shoot a woman at a Super America gas station at 7th Street E. and Johnson Parkway in St. Paul just before 5 a.m. Saturday, according to police.

After conducting a traffic stop on the vehicle, police discovered two handguns inside the car and a pipe bomb in the trunk, according to Steve Linders with the St. Paul Police. Several homes were evacuated before the bomb squad disposed of the device. Nobody was hurt as a result of the incident.

38-year-old Fredric Pittman III and 40-year-old Monttraill Claiborne were both arrested under suspicion of possessing both a stolen firearm and explosive device. They were booked into the Ramsey County Jail.
