Nekima Levy-Pounds plans to run for mayor of Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Civil rights attorney and activist Nekima Levy-Pounds announced on her social media pages she will be running for mayor of Minneapolis.

According to a post on her Facebook page, she will be making her formal announcement to run on Tuesday at noon across from the Minneapolis Police Department's Fourth Precinct. The day also marks the anniversary of the day a police officer fatally shot Jamar Clark, which sparked protests. Levy-Pounds often spoke at protests and gatherings.

Democratic Mayor Betsy Hodges, who was first elected mayor in 2012, is seeking re-election. Other candidates will likely join the race. The election will be in November 2017.
