I-35W closed from Richfield to New Brighton for weekend construction

It’s been another busy summer for road construction, and one of the biggest closures yet is happening this weekend: a large stretch of Interstate 35W is shutting down starting Friday night.

A 15-mile stretch of I-35W is going to be shutdown in both directions from Richfield to New Brighton, Minnesota.

“There’s ways to get into downtown; you just have to think about it and plan ahead," said David Aeikens with the Minnesota Department of Transportation .

If you thought you couldn't stand one more closure or detour, tap into your patience because it’s about to get a whole lot worse.

The stretch of 35W will be closed the next two weekends from 9 p.m. July 27 until 5 a.m. July 30.

The length is so long because it's actually two projects causing simultaneous closures: the downtown to crosstown project and the Minneapolis to Roseville project.

So, if you need to go north or south through Minneapolis the next two weekends, you'll need to take Highway 100. If your final destination is downtown, you could also take Interstate 94.

But with all that traffic moving over there, expect delays.

“Give yourself plenty of time, think about where you are going; there are some big events this weekend,” Aeikens said.
