Home invasion in Elk River leads to assault

The Elk River Police Department is investigating a home invasion that led to a tense encounter between the suspects and the residents.

According to Police Chief Ron Nierenhausen, Sunday around 2 a.m. officers responded to a report of a home invasion burglary in the 16800 block of Yale Street.

Once police arrived, they learned two male suspects broke into the home and assaulted the people inside. One of the suspects, who was armed with a gun, got into a struggle with a resident. During the encounter the gun went off, which caused the two suspects to leave. The suspects were gone before the police could get there.

No one was seriously injured. The case remains under investigation.

Police say there is not a public threat.
